Potential research topics!

For this research paper I narrowed down my topics, to my top three choices:

The first topic is “Should sex and violence on television or in the movies be restricted?” Displaying sexual and violent behavior has increased so drastically over the 18 years of my life. I think that this is a good topic to write about because it is a current issue that is placing a strain on television and how people are being portrayed. What sparked my interest about this issue is, when I was flipping through channels I saw a couple engaged in sexual activity. It was mind boggling because I was in the low channels. I can’t believe what people will put on TV. now days. Should children be restricted to what they watch, just because producers don’t know how to keep shows pg-13?

My second topic is, “Should tobacco companies be held responsible for smoking-related illnesses and deaths?” My answer to this is yes. We have all seen the truth commercials and even shared a laugh or two about the cleverness of the acting/skits. But the message they are trying to reveal is very important and is over looked. I will never understand why people smoke in the first place, but I would like to find out why tobacco companies haven’t been shut down. You would think they would ban something that harmed people by causing lung cancer and potentially death. Why aren’t tobacco companies responsible for smoke related illnesses and death?

My third topic is, “Is standardized state or national testing (such as the FCAT) helping or hurting American schools?” I came across this question when I watched a documentary about an African American student who needed to pass the FCAT. It was her third years repeating the fourth grade, because she could not pass this exam that was required by the state. She did well in the class she was just unable to pass the test. Why hasn’t this test been banned by there school systems?

  1. The first topic sounds do-able, except that tv shows already post an indication of the show's content with MA, V, L, D, S, etc. You could do something with this topic, though, saying more should be done besides that, of course.
